Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin says his party “cannot be the only party that plays by the rules anymore” and that he’s “sick” of Democrats “bringing a pencil to a knife fight.”
He also urged fellow Democrats to “stand up and fight,” telling the crowd at the DNC’s annual summer meeting in Minneapolis, “We can’t be the only party who plays by the rules.”
“I call on all of us to fight for a country that’s being attacked from the inside, a country being attacked by an insidious force … And are you ready to fight? I know Texas is always ready for that, right. Right, Texas? Is California ready for that fight?” Martin said.
“Are you ready to take back our country from the wannabe-king in the White House?” he asked to loud cheers.
He also praised his party for pushing back on GOP-friendly congressional maps in Texas.
President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “wanted a showdown,” Martin said. “Well, hell we gave them that showdown.”
Democrat lawmakers in Texas returned to the state on Monday, ending a two-week walkout that broke quorum and temporarily blocked Republican efforts to redraw congressional maps at Trump’s behest.
