The latest polling numbers reflect what happens when Republicans unite around shared priorities — a message that sharply contrasts with the disarray inside the Democratic Party, Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., told Newsmax on Wednesday.
“As I look at these polls here. I think it shows what happens when Republicans stick together and we say what we’re going to do,” Marshall told “The Chris Salcedo Show.”
“Contrast that to the Democrats. All this lying [MSNBC host] Miss [Nicole] Wallace there has a very, very short memory, not recalling all the people that have compared President Donald Trump to Hitler,” he said, referring to Wallace’s on-air claim that no Democrat had ever compared Trump to Adolf Hitler.
Marshall’s comments came as the federal government shutdown entered its 29th day Wednesday, with Senate Republicans urging Democrats to support a stopgap measure to fund agencies through Nov. 21.
Democrats are demanding that the package include an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire at year’s end.
Although the left has been quick to criticize Trump and the GOP, Marshall said Republicans have stayed laser-focused on keeping the government open while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
“We often get criticized as Republicans that we’re not sticking together,” Marshall said. “In this case, we’re sticking together.
“We’re keeping to our goals — that we want to keep the government open, but we also want to maintain a balanced budget.”
Marshall cited new polling that shows voters — especially Republicans and independents — continue to rank the national debt among their top concerns.
A recent Peter G. Peterson Foundation survey found more than 90% of voters in seven swing states said it’s important for candidates to have a plan to deal with the national debt.
Another poll by the Independent Center found 81% of Republicans and 67% of independents consider deficit reduction “very” or “somewhat” important.
“Our GOP base, when they see that we’re sticking to our guns here, they say, ‘Yes, balance the budget,’ ” Marshall said. “And you see independents there too, who believe this is the No. 1 problem facing the nation.”
Marshall also praised Newsmax for challenging media narratives and holding political figures accountable for what he called misinformation and selective outrage.
“Kudos to you guys for helping to inform America, for keeping on this and calling out the lies as you see them,” he said.
Marshall said the GOP’s show of discipline and unity behind Trump’s agenda is resonating with voters who are “hungry for results after years of Washington infighting.”
“When Republicans stick together,” Marshall said, “we win.”
